Dog Command Training 101

Guiding Principles when training / shaping your dog

1 - Positive Reinforcement by rewards is MUST

The reward can be Edibles or affection or toys. Keep the below in mind:

1. Keep treats Small and LowCal. Use a LOT when starting out.
2. Carrot/Apple/Banana before biscuits.
3. NEVER human biscuits
4. Variety of rewards keeps it fresh and puppy motivated but training treats are special and separate.
5. Try to use non-edible rewards more
6. Praise/touch/toys can work as well.

2 - Train little but often

1. 5mins at a time before 12 weeks, max 10Min at a time after
2. Stop before puppy loses interest or gets distracted.
3. Teach commands in different locations.
4. Repeat and have patience.
5. Teach complex behaviours (eg Stay or stop jumping) in steps
6. Praise/reward for small increments/improvements
7. Go at the puppy's pace. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

3 - The best training is PLAY

1. Training is most effective when fun.
2. Puppy Distracted or un-eager for treats means we stop and try again later
3. Puppy must feel good things happen when he/she listens to you.
4. Have privacy when you start. Separate room.
5. No distractions like toys not used for training or other people
6. Primary focus of the pup MUST be on you.

4 - Train yourself as well

1. Short commands. One word or no more than 2.
2. Same command for an action all the time.
3. Language is irrelevant. Even Swahili will do.
4. Make your commands part of the daily grind. Sit before leashing or stay before allowing eating.
5. Do not have mixed signals.
6. Use Hand Signals for all training. The combination will imprint better.
7. Eventually reduce or stop verbal cues and use only signals.

5 - The "Don'ts"

1. Don't reward undesirable behaviour.
2. Learn to ignore your pup when necessary.
3. Don't be afraid to withhold attention or affection in the early stages.
4. Don't punish your dog for not listening. Stop and turn away to something else and try again when pup comes back.
5. Draw attention with a sharp 'NO' or 'OUCH' or a clap/loud snap and redirect the pup.
